CPD

Workshops, CPD packages and School Support

I offer workshops or whole staff CPD events, in person or online.

I have worked with schools across the UK over the past ten years, and I have recent experience of both the Scottish and English curriculums.

I can tailor a session for your school context and always make sure I spend time talking with school leaders about how to make sure the CPD will have impact.

Prioritising Teachers

From August/September 2024, I will be piloting with a small number of schools a new wellbeing support system for staff called 'Prioritising Teachers.' It is an investment in staff wellbeing to support motivation and positivity, and in turn to improve outcomes for young people. It involves:

1. An initial one hour  presentation to staff (in person or online) on strategies to support their resilience and wellbeing. This will be based on my book 'Teacher Resilience'.

2. Twenty coaching sessions that staff can book in for across the academic year. These sessions can a space for staff to discuss their wellbeing and be supported by a professional, qualified coach.

This will be offered at a 50% discount for schools involved in the pilot from 2024/25. The total package will be £1000.

I have also run well-received CPD events on the following topics:

The session Jamie delivered for us was by far one of the most useful CPD sessions we have ever invested in. It has had both an immediate and lasting impact on our staff and, in turn, our students. Not only did Jamie work with staff to emphasise the importance of learning from mistakes and building resilience for our own development, but we also asked Jamie to further explore many of the ideas from his book ‘A Quiet Education’. As a result, staff are now much more confident at maximising the potential of our ‘quiet’ students; we wanted to empower our staff to create environments where ALL students could flourish, and Jamie’s session most certainly helped us with that. Whilst planning the session, Jamie took the time to get to know our school so he could ensure he would really build on, and emphasise, what we were working towards as a school. All teaching staff, ranging from ECTs, middle leaders and SLT, took part in the session and still comment on how beneficial, engaging, and enjoyable it was!’

Jamie delivered an engaging and interactive session to our staff on strategies to enhance positive relationships, learning and behaviour. Looking at behavioural coaching and exploring our circle of influences helped staff to collaborate and create a toolkit of ideas to proactively manage behaviour in the classroom.

“Senior School teaching staff at Stewart’s Melville College enjoyed a helpful and positive interactive seminar led by Jamie Thom during an inservice training day. He enhanced healthy conversations on maintaining positive culture and learning strategies in and out of the classroom in our work with teenagers. His interactive presentation style, which included minimal PowerPoint slides and allowed for meaningful small groups discussion, was appreciated. Everyone felt Jamie’s natural honesty and experience meant for well spent CPD time with excellent practical takeaways. A familiar speaker at various education and research conferences, Jamie speaks and engages with each group’s needs and culture instead of a general brushstroke for all. He sticks to allotted time and speaks with a wealth of knowledge and practical experience, all backed up by authentic research. I would encourage education colleagues to follow him on social media and read any or all of his excellent published books.”

Clear, concise and highly insightful – Jamie delivered a fantastic, innovative and interactive presentation on behaviour management for the Bristol Network of the Chartered College of Teaching, which gave participants opportunities to reflect on their practice in the light of the evidence he presented. Having authored numerous book titles and been a teacher, Jamie offers credibility, authenticity and real-life experience, which helped to paint a coherent picture of the positive approaches which can be used to successfully coordinate a classroom. Jamie’s thoughtful, well-informed and compassionate style will be of immense value to educators who are seeking to improve their practice. Having been privileged to see Jamie speak at a number of events, I was confident that a session in school would provoke thought and inspire our staff to consider the impact curiosity has on our young people and their learning. Jamie created a session that used our school learning and teaching toolkit as well as our school values to ensure that his session was bespoke to our school community. The session allowed reflection on our own practice as well as providing examples of how we might execute a range of strategies to further build curiosity amongst ourselves and young people. School leaders are always on the lookout for a great and inspiring speaker for those start of term insets. Jamie’s name came my way very highly recommended, and he surpassed the expectations. After reading his Quiet Education book, I asked Jamie to address our Heads of Department on their Away Day. He took time ahead of the session to discuss with me what would be the best areas to cover in the time. Half the time was looking at what we can do to make the role of a teacher more sustainable (his slow teaching philosophy) and then moved on to ensuring we don’t teach to the extroverts in our classrooms but value and celebrate introverts. The measure of good inset has to be one with a lasting impact, and Jamie’s certainly provided this for us all at Harrow.
